The list of nominees has been released for the first World Sustainable Travel and Hospitality Awards (WSTHA) scheduled to take place in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. The Belize Tourism Board will be the first host of what is planned to be an annual undertaking.

Several local businesses and organizations have made it on the list including Che’il Mayan Chocolate, Eco-Museum Belize, San Antonio Women’s Cooperative, Jardin Pachamama, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Turneffe Atoll Sustainability Association, Belize Barrier Reef Watch, Belize Tourism Industry Association and Chan Chich Lodge. Persons can now log on to the website and cast votes for the nominees under 21 categories.

The voting platform will be open until August 2 with votes to be based on the nominee’s most impactful contribution to sustainable travel. Belize has been nominated in the global categories of World’s Leading Sustainable Destination 2024; World’s Leading Sustainable Female Empowerment Initiative 2024; Leading Sustainable Cultural Heritage Project 2024; Leading Sustainable Marine Conservation Initiative 2024; and the Leading Sustainable Community Engagement Programme 2024. The winners will be announced at the inaugural WSTHA Gala Ceremony in Belize, the official host destination on September 27. Hundreds of entries assessed and shortlisted by students at the Nova Business with approval and oversight by the WSTHA Advisory Board.

According to the board, factors considered were the organizations’ internationally recognized standards, best practices, relative impact and partnerships. The World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards was launched in 2023 at COP 28 in Dubai on World Tourism Day.
